Because I can't stand politics anymore...

... I've decided to totally ignore it for awhile and post some pictures of the Michigan Renaissance Festival that my family and I went to this weekend.

Now, I have to admit that as nerdy as I can be, I somehow have bypassed the whole Renaissance Festival thing. I'm not sure how this happened because I used to do a lot of community theatre, which let's face it, is probably what half of these people do in their spare time. I've only been to three of these in my life, and I have to admit that I'm totally fascinated by them. I kind of wonder if all of these people know each other, and if there are cliques of people or some kind of social structure to these things. If any of you know, please tell me because I'm really rather curious about how the whole Ren Faire world works.

Anyway, pictures.

For some reason at this Ren Faire foxtails were all the rage. I dunno what the hell was up with that, but they were everywhere. Can someone enlighten about what that's about?

And another:

Even small children got wrapped up in the tail fetish.

What I always find hilarious about Ren Faires is how liberal "Renaissance" gets interpreted. For instance, pickle carts were apparently very big in the Renaissance (there were no less than five at this festival).

Photobucket

So was quasi-goth clothing (I don't think this lady's ever heard of the concept "age appropriate attire"):
Photobucket

Fairy wings:

Armor for WoW Nerds hot chicks. My husband and I just about peed our pants when this dude touched the mannequin's boob. What happens at the Ren Faire, stays at the Ren Faire, unless assholes like us take your picture and post it on a blog.:

Giant anime sized swords (held at suggestive angles):

Pirates (wearing more age inappropriate attire):
Photobucket

Groups of emo teenagers wearing tin foil:

And cell phones:

There was the requisite greasy turkey leg that had to be bought (for six bucks!). Sadly, the idea of the turkey leg was much tastier than the reality of it. On the other hand, it was fun to watch my Republican preppie friend Don eat one. That was totally worth six bucks.
Photobucket

Since we didn't have our dogs there to feed it to, we did the next logical thing and fed it to my son.
Photobucket

There were also a bunch of cool rides. Unfortunately those were also ridiculously overpriced as well.
Photobucket

The jousting was really dissapointing. Last year we went to a different festival and they had full contact jousting with a rail and everything where the jousters actually got up to almost full speed and hit each other with their lances. These guys were totally lame and barely touched each other before falling off their horse. At least they looked cool.
Photobucket

We did see some really cool costumes (heh, none of which probably qualify as Renaissance too).

My favorites were these viking guys. I'm trying convince my husband that he needs to dress up as a Viking next year. I don't think this will be a hard sell.
Photobucket

I dunno wtf this guy was supposed to be, but I thought the bones on his hat were entertaining.
Photobucket

Finally some older ladies with some style. I thought the headdress and the necklace were very cool:

This was cool too. I have to give her credit, I would have had a hell of a time navigating a big crowd in skirts that large, but she was working it.

And the require spawn pictures. Ivy taking all the madness in:

Heh, thanks!

I dunno why the goths love Ren Faires so much. Maybe it's because they get to wear horns and fairy wings out in public? Or tinfoil (I'm still scratching my head over that one. I wish I'd had the balls to ask wtf that was about.)

Along with the truly bizarre fox tail thing, the tin foil confounds me - I'm just SO curious what the heck that's about!

I know. I wish I'd had the guts to ask them what the hell the tinfoil was all about. Maybe it's some kind of satirical deconstruction of Ren Faire attire. Or maybe they just thought it was cool? I guess we'll never know now, lol.

I love Ivy's expression: she looks like she's going, "These are grownups? Really? Grownups are weird."

Foxtails? Look like furries to me.

That's what I was wondering although I thought furries did the whole body thing and not just tails. There was a vendor who was selling these things in a booth. I should have asked him what the hell that was about.

I approve. My f-list's lately been flooded with political posts, and I've had it up to here.

It's so hard for us Americans not to get angsty and wrapped up in politics considering what's going on in our country at the moment, but personally I'm completely reached saturation point. I can't believe that more people aren't totally burned out since the media has been covering these campaigns almost 24/7 for the last year and a half.

In an effort to keep my sanity, I think I'm just going to try and tune all of that shit out until Nov 4th. I may have to resort to plugging my ears with my fingers and screaming LALALA at the top of my lungs though.

Yeah, I can imagine; not being American, I find it all a bit repetitious, but then I doubt anyone on my f-list would be terribly interested in the current political situation in Thailand either. Especially if I were to post about it six times a day, as some people on my f-list do.

What? You mean America and our problems aren't the center of all creation? That there are people out there that could give a shit less about our elections and political problems? Blasphemy!

I feel for all the non Americans on everyone's f-lists. You guys must think that we're all batshit crazy by now lol.

Personally, I'd welcome some ranting about Thailand's political problems. At least it would be different.

I kind of am both, but with a totally unhealthy curiosity about it as well.

I love Ivy's expression, rofl.

"omg! WoW-boobies man" didn't hear you guys laughing? I'd have been roaring if I saw that in person! :D

We were laughing so hard, especially since my husband and I were arguing over whether or not he'd actually break down and touch the boob as it was happening, lol. The guy kept circling the mannequin for several minutes and you could actually see the gears turning in his head. (He kept saying "Wait for it... wait for it..." and then when it happened it was like "Score!"

You'd think that three adults and two kids staring at you from less than ten feet away would clue you in. Apparently the lure of the boobie is too strong though, rofl.

(popped over from thriftwhore again)
up, yeah. Those would be known as furries generally, but I think those fox tails sell for relatively cheap ($10-20) while almost everything else is way more expensive so that is my logic as to the great amount of people wearing them. I love the rennaisance fair and dressing up and I went to the Sterling Forest one in Rockland County, NY almost every year with my dad and my mom sewed me a sweet costume too. The SCA folks are generally a group, but anyone that love showing off their BEWBS in non-age-or-time-period-appropriate garb enjoys these things. But you'll always get at least an eyeful of some thing you want to see and something terrifying/disgusting. Lol. yeah. dorks. :)

Re: (popped over from thriftwhore again)
I have to say that dressing up seems like it would be a ton of fun. It's like it's Halloween (my favorite holiday) all summer long except with beer, turkey legs and jousting which is something I can definitely see the appeal of. I'm just amazingly impressed by how much effort/time/money people have invested in their costumes. Hell, if I spent that much effort on a costume, I'd probably wear it every time I went to the supermarket just to show it off, lol.

Thanks for clearing the tail fetish up for me. I always thought that furries were like the dudes that dressed up like animals (with like a full body costume or something). I didn't realize that they could just do tails. I think you're right about their being cheap, which is why they were everywhere at the fair.
